Sailing to Santorini

Discover the best way of achieving one of the ultimate dream sailing journey to one of the world’s stunning destinations.

I have sailed extensively in Greece, including the Cycaldes, I we never visited the wonderful Santorini. That is not to say I haven’t visited this amazing island, I did that via the ferries some years ago. And like many, I fell in love with iconic roofs and revled in the geologic wonder that has formed these amazing islands

Yacht Charter to Santorini

We get a number of requests to sail to this amazing and unique island. That is hardly surprising, so how can you Charter a Yacht and sail to one of the worlds most iconic and sought after destination and what are the considerations?

To answer this, let me finish telling you why it hasn’t made it to my sailing itinerary to date.  Whilst I have sailed yachts in the Cyclades, I have invariably collected the yacht from Athens (Saronic Gulf) and sailed their over the two weeks.  But the risk of getting too far south and having the Meltemi pin us South, has always kept me further North than this famous island.

Yacht Charter to Santorini

In there a risk free way?

Yes there are roughly three ways…

First:

is to charter at a closer base than Athens.  Paros is best.  Here they have plenty of choice and availability.  Using this as a launch pad for your trip, and, weather forecast permitting, head South.  Make sure you leave plenty of time to head back up, and you should have little difficulty in including Santorini in your itinerary.

Second:

Start and end in Santorini.  This sounds perfect, but as there are no charter bases, your yacht would have to be delivered both ways adding a lot of expense.  If your budget can stretch, and you with to stay in this area for the majority of the trip, then I recommend it.  But remember that you will have to head North to see the rest of the Gulf… I have a better idea.

Third:

This is a blend of the first two options.  Why not collect your yacht is Paros, Syros or even Poros or Athens.  Then do a one way sail to Santorini “with the wind” and catch a ferry back. https://www.greekferries.gr/ Now your getting the best of all worlds, leaving you to worry about the little.
