3. Weather In Croatia

The weather. Between May and October is Croatia flotilla season. Croatia is a country of two climates one for the coast and another inland. The coast has a Mediterranean climate with dry, hot and very little rainfall. Temperatures during this time vary from the mid to high 20c’s (77 – 86f) to well into the 30c’s (the high 80s to low 90f’s).

Off Season Croatia. Although the winter is much cooler than the summer, temperatures rarely fall lower than 5c (41f) but they are often rainier and wetter than the summer months. Few Croatia Flotillas operators at these times. If you do want to sail at the time of year, you may wish to consider a Bareboat Charter

Best Months To Visit. The best months to visit Croatia or undertake a Croatia flotilla holiday are either, May, June or September, where the weather is slightly cooler than summer, but it is also quieter, and the sea is still warm enough to swim in. Croatia has around 2700 hours of sunshine a year.

Wind Conditions. The wind in Croatia is usually a prevailing northwesterly wind, ranging from force 2 to 5, usually increasing in the afternoon, in the summer months, it can be stronger. Croatia has a wind pattern called the Bura, which is a strong northeasterly wind, which blows over the mountains towards the coastline.

The Bura. The wind is it’s strongest of the Velebit Mountains near Zadar but can be felt in the majority of the northern Dalmatian. The Bura tends to be stronger in the winter months but can occasionally be felt throughout the summer months. The wind pattern is caused by the country’s two climates crashing together and it can be unpredictable and strong, appearing from nowhere.

4. Croatia Flotilla Itineraries

Itineraries. A Croatia flotilla in and around the Dalmatian Islands typically take either north or south route. This depends on the Croatia Flotilla desired and the activities or places of interest and allows guests to take a two-week flotilla.

North Route. The Croatia flotilla North Dalmatian Route usually departs from Split and travels to some or all of the following destinations; Split, Vodica, Šibenik, Kornati, Telašcica, Iz, Vglijan, Zadar, Pašman, Murter, Zirje, Rogoznica, Drvenik Veli, Trogir or Solta.

North Route. The Croatia flotilla South Dalmatian Route departs from Split and travels to some or all of the following destinations; Split, Brac, Hvar, Pelješac, Peninsula, Mljet, Korcula, and Vis.

Is It A Strict Itinerary. To a degree year the itinerary is defined by the Croatia flotilla you’re on. Occasionally it is altered or amended by the weather of by agreement of the crews.

5. Required Qualifications for A Croatia Flotilla Holiday

Qualifications. To participate in a Croatia flotilla holiday, the skipper of your party must possess certain qualifications to rent the boat. For a Croatia flotilla, a valid ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Day Skipper or higher and a valid VHF license is required. 6. Extras Required

Extras. On a Croatia flotilla holiday, it is recommended to plan for some additional spending. Berths in marinas tend to cost around £1.50 a foot for overnight mooring, town quays £1 per foot and moorings are a similar cost. Be warned that some of these marinas or moorings are located within National Parks and often an additional National Park fee is required, occasionally it is included within the mooring price (but worth always checking it out).

Estimating Costs. A good way to estimate the costs of evening meals out on a Croatia flotilla is to plan for an evening meal costing around 150-200 kuna (between £18 – £20 or between $23 – $30) per person. Cash is used in the majority of places with credit card facilities being limited. On a Croatia flotilla, it is advised to carry around cash for purchases. Å ibenik and many other larger villages have ATM facilities to withdraw cash when required.

7. Getting To Croatia

Croatias Airports. Croatia is not huge, but not that small either. There are those that choose to drive, but the vast majority fly into one of the three main airports on the Dalmatian Coast: Split, Dubrovnik, and Zadar. The finding your closest airport makes sense.

Zadar Airport. Located in the northern Dalmatian region, on the Adriatic Sea, this small airport offers seasonal flights to/from 16 European destinations, including Spain, Poland, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Italy, UK, Belgium, France, Germany, and Austria.  If you are arriving from further afield you can get connecting flights through London, Paris or another European hub to the rest of the world.

Split Airport. Split is Croatia’s second-largest city, if your Croatia flotilla is beginning from this eastern city you can take one of the seasonal flights to/from; Greece, Canada, Russia, UK, Austria, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Poland, France and more. As one of Europes travel hubs, it is easy to transfer to most places from this airport.

Dubrovnik Airport. This jewel of a city is located in and is an ideal airport to fly into if you are departing from the cities port or marina. From Dubrovnik airport, in the summer you can fly to/from Greece, Ireland, UK, France, Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Israel, Spain, Dubai, Finland, Russia, Beirut and more.
