Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Quiz · Electronic navigation

The radar is in head-up mode and you are steering 270°T. The electronic bearing line (EBL) through the target reads 045° relative. What is the true bearing of the target?

A radar screen with your heading at the top and three range rings. A dashed gold line (the EBL) and a dashed gold circle (the VRM) cross on a single target, which is ahead and to the right. The readout says: head-up, HDG 270°T, EBL 045° relative, VRM 5.0 M, rings 2 M.

Show the answer

315°T. On a head-up display bearings are relative to the bow. Add the ship's heading to the relative bearing to get the true bearing (and take off 360 if the answer is over 360): 270 plus 045 is 315°T. The variable range marker (VRM) gives the range in the same way the EBL gives the bearing.
