Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Quiz · Electronic navigation
The echo of a buoy on your radar has a trail beyond it: one long mark and two short ones, pointing away from you. What is it?
A radar screen with your heading at the top and three range rings. Ahead and to the right is a single small echo. Directly beyond it, in line with the centre of the screen, are one long bright mark and then two short ones, pointing away from the centre.
Show the answer
A racon: a radar beacon on the buoy answering your radar with a Morse letter. A racon is a radar beacon fitted to an important mark. When your radar pulse hits it, it replies with a coded flash that paints on the screen as a Morse letter, starting at the mark and running outwards. Here a dash and two dots make the letter D, and the chart shows which letter each racon uses.
