You are heading in at night in the white sector of this light. It turns red. What has happened, and what do you do?

A chart, north at the top. A light on the coast at the top shines three sectors down over the sea: red on the left (west), white in the middle, green on the right (east). A yacht is in the white sector, heading north towards the light.

Show the answer

You have strayed west of the white sector: alter to starboard. A sectored light shows different colours over different arcs. Here the white sector marks the approach, with red to the west of it and green to the east. Seeing red means you are west of the line, so come to starboard until the light shows white again.
