The skipper has drawn a clearing line: the lighthouse bearing 080°M. To stay south of the line, clear of the rocks, what must the bearing of the lighthouse be?
A chart, north at the top. A lighthouse stands on the coast on the east side. A pencil line runs from the lighthouse out to the west-south-west and is labelled 080°M. A patch of rocks lies north of the line. A yacht is south of the line.

Not more than 080°M. On the line the lighthouse bears 080°. Stray north towards the rocks and the bearing grows (due west of the light it would be 090°). Stay south and it gets smaller. So the rule is "lighthouse not more than 080°".
