Day Skipper Quiz · Chartwork

Your three bearings do not quite meet and leave this small triangle, a "cocked hat". Where should you assume you are?

A chart. Three pencil bearing lines, drawn from a lighthouse, a church and a beacon on the shore, cross to form a small triangle in the water, shaded gold. A patch of rocks lies below and to the left of the triangle.

Show the answer

At the corner of the triangle nearest the rocks. A small cocked hat is normal, because no bearing is perfect. Play safe: plot yourself at the point of the triangle closest to the nearest danger and plan from there. You could even be outside the triangle, so near a danger check your position another way too, such as the depth. If the triangle is large, take the bearings again.
