Day Skipper Quiz · Chartwork

This is a one-hour course to steer triangle. Which line do you measure to find the course to steer?

A chart plot. Line A runs from the start to the destination and has two arrowheads. Line B, with three arrowheads, runs from the start down and to the right. Line C, with one arrowhead, runs from the end of B up to line A, meeting it where a short dashed arc crosses it, some way before the destination.

Show the answer

C: from the end of the tide to where your boat speed cuts the track. A is the ground track you want to make good, and B is one hour of tide. Open the dividers to one hour of boat speed and strike an arc from the end of B on to line A. Line C, from the end of the tide to that point, is the course to steer. Joining the end of the tide to the destination is a common mistake.
