Day Skipper Quiz · Anchoring

You are staying at anchor overnight and the wind is forecast to swing right round. What should you check before you settle down?

Seen from above: a yacht lying downwind of her anchor, with a dashed circle drawn round the anchor and passing through the yacht. Some rocks lie inside the circle on the opposite side from the yacht. Another boat is anchored just outside the circle.

The whole circle she could swing round is clear. A boat at anchor can end up anywhere on a circle round her anchor as the wind or tide changes. Check the whole swinging circle for rocks, shallows and other boats, and remember that other boats may swing differently from you, depending on how much chain or rope they have out.
