Day Skipper Quiz · Anchoring

You are anchoring on chain only, and the depth will be 6 m at high water. By the usual rule of thumb, what is the least chain you should let out?

A cross-section: a yacht lying to her anchor, with the chain curving from her bow down to the anchor on the seabed. Labels: 6 m deep at high water, and chain: question mark.

24 m. The usual rule is at least 4 times the depth for all chain, and at least 6 times for rope with a length of chain. Work from the deepest it will get: 4 times 6 m is 24 m. Let out more if it blows hard and there is room.
