Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Quiz · Position fixing

She steered 090°T for an hour with a northerly wind giving 10° of leeway. Which point is her estimated position?

A chart plot, north at the top. From a fix marked 1000 a dashed line labelled heading 090°T runs due east to point A. A second line with one arrowhead leaves the same fix angled 10 degrees south of the dashed line and ends at point C. The wind blows from the north and a label reads leeway 10°. Two equal lines with three arrowheads run south-east: one from A to point B, one from C to point D.

Show the answer

D: the leeway track with the tide added. Apply leeway first: the wind pushes her downwind of her heading, so her water track is 100°T, not 090°T. Plot the distance run along that water track, then add the tide from its end. Using the heading without leeway puts the estimated position upwind of where she really is.
