You have opened your dividers to the distance between two points. Which scale do you measure it against?
A chart with a scale running up its side, labelled A, and a scale running along the bottom, labelled B. A pair of dividers is opened between two points on the chart.

A: the latitude scale at the side, level with where you are working. One minute of latitude is one nautical mile, so distance is measured on the latitude scale at the side of the chart. That scale stretches as you go further from the equator, so use the part level with your working area. The longitude scale is not a distance scale.
