Day Skipper Quiz · Channels and traffic schemes

There is no tide. You need to cross this traffic separation scheme. Which heading should you steer?

Seen from above: two traffic lanes with a separation zone between them. Traffic in the upper lane runs right to left, in the lower lane left to right. A yacht below the lanes with three dashed tracks: A straight up across the lanes, B slanting up to the right, C slanting up to the left.

A: at right angles to the traffic flow. Rule 10 says cross on a heading as nearly as practicable at right angles to the general direction of traffic flow. It is your heading that counts: if the tide sets you sideways, keep the heading at right angles anyway, so ships can see clearly what you are doing.
