About this yacht
The Jeanneau SUN ODYSSEY 490 we present is genuinely a yacht for celebration, combining sophistication with functionality. Designed with 5 plus 1 cabins, it’s ideal for sailing with large gatherings of friends or extended family members. It accommodates up to 12 guests, with 11 enjoying private sleeping spaces.

LIVING AREA

The SO 490's living area offers exceptional comfort, even with its sizable table, L-shaped sofa, and cozy seating. The kitchen, designed in a C-shape, is practical and equipped with a two-burner hob and oven, a double sink, a freezer, and a double-drawer refrigerator.
On the starboard side of the living space, there is a spacious folding dining table that can be converted into a double bed. Beneath the cushions, large lockers provide ample storage for provisions and gear. Natural light and ventilation in the living room are ensured by elongated windows, portholes, and two central hatches.
There are four roomy double cabins, plus a fifth interior cabin featuring bunk beds. The three bathrooms come with electric toilets and showers. Fans serve all cabins and the lounge area. The sixth cabin, located at the bow and accessible via a deck porthole, is completely self-contained, offering a single bed, electric toilet, sink, and shower.

OUTDOOR AREA

The revamped "walk-around" side deck gently inclines downward toward the wheelhouse on both sides, removing the necessity to climb steps or backrests when transitioning from the cockpit to the side deck—you just walk around the rudder. Moreover, the rudder includes comfortable forward-facing seating, offering an ideal position for steering.
The cockpit table folds away to free up space around the seating area, allowing for easy and comfortable movement regardless of the weather.
Twin wheels, a sizable divided backstay, and an extra-large bathing platform facilitate effortless boarding and unrestricted access to the roller shutter.
The engine start panel is smoothly integrated into the cockpit table mold, accompanied by electronic instruments, a compass, and controls for cockpit lighting. Generously sized winches let you manage every maneuver directly from the cockpit, making navigation safe, straightforward, and stress-free.

Retractable bow thruster, Sea water tap in the kitchen, Drawer refrigerator in the salon, Top-loading freezer in the salon, Fans in the cabins and salon, Electric wc
SailChecker Expert View

Great family choice The Sun Odyssey 490 is a solid mid-range cruiser that works brilliantly for larger groups or extended families wanting to explore together. With 6 cabins and 12 berths, you've got genuine flexibility to invite friends or split into smaller sailing parties without feeling cramped.

Well-equipped vessel This 2019 boat comes with genuinely useful kit: bow thruster for easy mooring, autopilot for long passages, decent nav electronics, and a swimming platform for those scorching Mediterranean days. The sprayhood and bimini mean you're not getting baked on watch, which matters on longer charters.

Solid value proposition At this size and spec, you're looking at a sensible price-to-comfort ratio, modern enough to be reliable, roomy enough that 8, 10 people don't feel like sardines, and equipped for proper cruising rather than just coastal pottering. The €3,000 deposit is reasonable for a boat of this stature.

One honest note Without knowing the charter base location, I can't comment on flight connections or transfer logistics, but do check how accessible Helm Yachting's base is from your nearest major airport, long transfers eat into precious holiday time when you've flown long-haul.

The marina & destination

Based at Capo d'Orlando Marina, in Capo d'Orlando, Italy. TERESA is operated by Helm Yachting.

Contrada S. Gregorio

Why this is a great starting point

Capo d'Orlando Marina sits on Sicily's north coast, offering immediate access to the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands; week one typically involves motor-sailing or light reaching to Lipari, Vulcano, and Salina, with the prevailing northwesterlies allowing comfortable passages of 15-25 nautical miles between anchorages. The marina provides a practical base for exploring protected anchorages around Panarea and Stromboli before returning westward along the Sicilian coast toward the Cefalù area, giving you a mix of overnight anchorages, small harbors, and volcanic scenery without long open-water passages.

Frequently asked questions
Can TERESA be rented with or without a skipper?
You can charter TERESA bareboat (you skipper) if you hold the relevant sailing licence, or hire a professional skipper alongside the yacht. The choice is yours when you request the quote.
What sailing licence do I need to charter TERESA?
Bareboat charter typically requires a recognised sailing licence (RYA Day Skipper, ICC, ASA, or equivalent) plus a VHF radio licence. The exact requirements depend on the country of charter — we confirm with the operator when you enquire.
What's included in the charter price?
The charter fee covers the yacht, standard equipment, and insurance for the dates booked. Tourist tax, transit log (final cleaning + bed linen), fuel, food, marina fees during the trip, and any optional extras (skipper, paddle board, etc.) are normally extra and paid at the base.
What additional costs should I expect at the base?
Typical mandatory extras are the transit log (often €200–€350), tourist tax (a small per-person-per-day fee), and a refundable security deposit (often €1,500–€5,000 depending on the yacht). Optional extras like a skipper, hostess, paddle board, or early check-in are listed on the quote.
How does the security deposit work?
The deposit is held by the operator at check-in (usually card pre-authorisation) and refunded after check-out if the yacht is returned without damage. Many operators offer a deposit-waiver insurance product that reduces the held amount in exchange for a smaller non-refundable premium.
Can I cancel my charter booking?
Cancellation terms vary by operator. Most allow cancellation with a full refund if requested more than 60–90 days before the start date, with progressive penalties closer to departure. Some operators offer a flexible-cancellation insurance product when you book.
Is the yacht insured?
Yes — every yacht is insured by the operator against damage and third-party liability. The insurance covers the yacht itself; personal effects and trip cancellation are not covered and are worth insuring separately.
What documents do I need to bring?
You'll need your passport, sailing licence (if chartering bareboat), VHF radio licence, and proof of payment. The operator will send a check-in form ahead of time covering crew details and any special requests.
What payment methods are accepted?
Charter fees are normally paid by bank transfer in advance (often a 50% deposit at booking, balance 30 days before charter). On-base extras are usually paid by card or in cash.
